Ella: Welcome back to TASHS campus news hub. And now to our first story. It is becoming a herculean task for students to find a comfortable place to iron their school uniforms in preparation for classes on Mondays. This condition is making it difficult for students to appear neat which can affect their concentrations in class. A cross section of the students mentioned to our reporter that they have reported to the appropriate authorities and are eagerly waiting for the problem to be solved. We also plead with the authorities to come to their aid as soon as possible.

Solace: The final examination for the final years continues unabated. The Home Economics students will write their practical this week in addition to the entire year group writing their English Oral. We wish them nothing but the best.

Ella: Some Senior High Schools across the country are unable to feed their students due to unavailability of food items. This has compelled such Heads to send their students home ahead of their vacation.

Ella: Do you think this will affect our school too

Solace: I pray not for we cannot go home again after all that COVID-19 has caused us.

Ella: Let us keep praying hard then.

Solace: On Friday, 27th August, 2021, the PTA contracted Mr. Samuel Kugblenu to label the Poly tanks they secured from our payment of the water distribution levy. According to our reporter, the PTA is bent on distributing water to the dormitories as soon as possible. They therefore entreat those who have not paid yet to endeavour to do so in other to help them complete the project. In addition, the PTA also did some repair works on the taps that are not flowing well in front of the school’s kitchen.

Ella: As we reported in our last week bulletin that some business minded girls are selling in the girls dormitory, a follow up on that incident by our One Eye reporter confirms that such girls are still actively engulfed in the act. They have even expanded the business to include new and tempting items, one of which our own reporter claimed to have enjoyed.

Solace: Another group that deserve recommendation is the school cadet. They have been tirelessly training and preparing to make the inauguration of the new school board of directors a success. This crop of students led by able CO and Master Albert Dankwah are leaving no stone unturned in other to make a grandeur of the day and we think they deserve recommendation for all and sundry apparentely.

The sport news is up next after the break.

Ella: Welcome back. Now to our first story. The first set of practical’s for the 2021 West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) which commenced a week ago with Visual Art students across the country ends on Friday, August 27th, 2021. Students pursuing French Language are also expected to write their Oral examination today. It is therefore necessary for a serene environment to be created for them  especially during prep hours.

Maureen: Some teachers in the Language Department of Tanyigbe Senior High School have made a clarion call on students to prioritize the use of English Language on the school compound. They have noted that students’ lack of vocabulary with which to express their thoughts in the classroom can be attributed to their preference for the use of local languages on campus. They were also quick to add that the students’ proficiency and competency in the English Language has a bearing on their performance not only in the English Language and other language related subject but also in other subjects.

Ella: Ghana records 1029 new COVID-19 cases as this takes the country’s total active cases to 144,000. The delta variant continues to break regional boundaries. Health experts across the country call on students not to trivialize the virus but rather ensure strict compliance with the safety protocols which includes wearing of nose masks, washing of hands and observing social distance.

Maureen: Mr. Aheto Kofi Mensah has been appointed the new Senior Housemaster of Tanyigbe Senior High School. He takes over from Mr. Wonder Asigbetse effective this semester. Mr. Aheto Mensah looks poised to discharge his duties as he continues to settle in his new office.

Ella: A very shocking revelation making waves on TASHS campus recounts how girls from some houses have turn the dormitories into market centres where they engage in the buying and selling of commodities such as pepper, tomatoes, fried fish and other items. This act has turn the dormitories into fertile breeding grounds for ants.

Major General Anyidoho: Ghanaian soldier celebrated as Rwandans mark 26th anniversary of 1994 Genocide

This is General Henry Kwami Anyidoho (born 13 July 1940). He was a Ghanaian military officer. Twenty-Seven (27) years ago, he led Ghana’s contingent in UN Peacekeeping Mission in Rwanda during the 1994 genocide.

General Anyidoho led Ghana’s military to serve in UNAMIR (United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda) under Canadian General RomΓ©o Dallaire. Anyidoho, who had experience in peacekeeping missions in Lebanon, Cambodia, and Liberia, served as the Deputy Commander of UNAMIR, in addition to his role as head of the Ghanaian contingent.

In recorded accounts by the former Commander of UNAMIR General Dallaire, in his book “Shake Hands With the Devil”, General Anyidoho and his Ghanaian contingent were singled out for praise for their courage and resourcefulness. They were given credit for sheltering thousands of Tutsis and Hutu moderates, saving them from death. When the Belgian government decided to withdraw their peacekeeping contingent, the UN Security Council instructed Dallaire to prepare to withdraw UNAMIR. Dallaire sought advice from General Anyidoho, who indicated to him that he and his Ghanaian troops would not leave. Ghanaian contingent stayed, against UN orders and protected Rwandans.

CHASS calls on government to address challenges ahead of reopening for SHS first years

The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary School (CHASS) has appealed to government to address infrastructural challenges facing some Senior High Schools ahead of school reopening for first-year students.

First-year SHS students are to report to school on Thursday, March 18, 2021.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) last week rescheduled the reopening of schools for such students to March 18 from the initial March 10, 2021 date.

The GES explained in a statement that this was “to enable the students and parents to have ample time to prepare for school and School Management to also prepare to receive them”.

“Management has also noted that some students have not yet enrolled and the extension will give these students the opportunity to do so as well,” the statement added.

Speaking to Citi News, President of CHASS Alhaji Yacoub A.B. Abubakar said government must also make available personal protective equipment for the students before schools reopen on Thursday.

According to him, they (CHASS) have their part to play and are ready for the students.

However, the government must also play its part to enable them to receive the students smoothly.

Mr. Abubakar specifically mentioned furniture, nose mask, Veronica buckets and sanitisers to be supplied by government.

As at the time of the interview, he insisted that those haven’t been supplied yet.

“In terms of preparation, we can look at it from two angles. That’s our internal preparations and with that I will tell you that to a large extent are ready to receive the first years when they begin reporting from Thursday. We have put in place our dormitories, our classrooms and generally the schools are in order to receive them. But we are having some few challenges in terms of furniture and others which we have drawn the attention of authorities to it.”

“We think if those issues are addressed, it will make our preparedness far better than what we have now. Similarly, we are also still in COVID-19 and with the freshers coming, there is also the need for the observance of the protocols. Here, I’m talking about the distribution of nose mask, Veronica buckets and sanitisers and they are to come from government and they haven’t come yet.”

GES postpones reopening date of SHS 1 students

The Ghana Education Service has postponed the reopening of first-year Senior High School students to Thursday, March 18 through to Sunday, March 21.

In a press release signed by the Deputy Director-General, the Service said the action is to give students who have had issues with self-placement time to complete the process.

Also, others who have not completed their school’s admission process have been encouraged to use the extension to complete the process.

The Service added that the rescheduling will also help parents have adequate time to prepare their kids for school as well as give schools additional time needed to prepare to welcome them.

“Management had decided that the reopening of schools for first-year students should be rescheduled for Thursday, March 18 through to Sunday March 21, 2021.”

“The spread out period is to enable the schools to structure the admission process in such a way that not too many students get crowded at the school at one particular point in time.”

Meanwhile, academic work will begin on Monday, March 22, in all schools.

GES has also urged parents to ensure that their children leave home with adequate nose masks to protect themselves amid Covid-19, while management of schools has also been tasked to ensure strict adherence to Covid-19 protocols.

COVID-19: Shift system in schools best solution – Africa Edu Watch

Policy think tank, Africa Education watch, has suggested to the Ghana Education Service (GES) to re-introduce the shift system in the schools in order to deal with the congestions. He said this will help curb the spread of the virus in the schools.

Most schools are faced with congestions with averagely 60 to 70 students in a class.

This is against the World Health Organizations (WHO) recommendations for smaller class sizes to curb the spread of the virus.

Mr Kofi Asare Executive Director of Africa Education Watch told TV3 in an interview that the best option at the moment is the reintroduction of the shift system.

“We shouldn’t shy away from that. It looks as if the GES is not interested in running the shift system because it was a bit evasive in its own guidelines.

“The shift system cannot be overlooked especially in urban and per urban areas with class size of averagely 60 and 70. That is the next best alternative we have.”

Ghana has recorded three more coronavirus deaths as of Friday January 22, the Ghana Health Service (GHS), has said.

This pushes the number of deaths from 358 to 361.

Meanwhile, 658 new cases have been recorded, the GHS added.

This brings the total number of active cases to 2,413. The total number of confirmed cases hit 59,480.

The recoveries stand at 56,706 patients have recovered and discharged.
